Background
I started competing in triathlons in 2005 with little-to-no experience in any of the three disciplines of Triathlon (swimming, biking, running). Now I’m doing my best to compete at an international level!
During my first sprint triathlon I thought I was going to die on the run. I told myself during that moment that I’d never do another triathlon again (even though I was already signed up for an Olympic distance triathlon scheduled a month later). Within an hour after the race I had decided that I was once again willing to do the Olympic race. A few hours later after I had mostly recovered, I was hooked on triathlon.
The next spring I got a head start on my training and I was very excited for my amazing season to start, but 1.5 weeks before my first race I was hit by a car while on a bike ride. I had to go to the hospital and eventually had surgery on my left knee for a torn MCL and separated Meniscus. So, instead of racing that summer, I spent it recovering. In some ways I see it as a blessing because I was able to rebuild my muscles the way I wanted them to be. I was able to race in a few sprint triathlons at the end of September and ended up qualifying for Nationals the following summer.
That is when triathlons took over my life! I have since started the triathlon club at Brigham Young University and prior to graduating I was able to compete with our team at the Collegiate National Championship. We placed 20th out of about 100 teams. Not a bad accomplishment for a first-year team!
Experience
In 2009 I placed 20th overall at the Sprint National Championship and then went on to place 10th American at the ITU Sprint World Championship in Australia. In the sprint of 2011, I qualified for the Duathlon World Championship in Spain, but was not able to attend due to the birth of our second child. I am now preparing to qualify for the Ironman World Championship by racing at Ironman St. George in May of 2012. I’m even working fewer hours to facilitate more training and chase this dream.
I formerly managed a triathlon store called PowerTri. This was awesome because I able to apply by business training and combine that with my interest and passion for triathlon. My time at PowerTri helped me gain addition insight and expertise in the sport of triathlon. I loved working there and helping people learn more about the sport of triathlon. I now work for a software company called Fishbowl. They provide a positive atmosphere that helps support my triathlon endeavors.
My Support Team
Most importantly however, I have a great wife who is always so supportive of my triathlon endeavors and two young boys who are always eager to cheer me on.
